Historic cocktail bar in London

"The Spaniards Inn" is a historic cocktail bar and a traditional pub located in London, England, known for its unique ambiance and long history. Built in 1585 by two Spanish brothers, this building is one of the oldest surviving pubs in the city and is recognized as a Grade II listed building. It is picturesque situated on the edge of Hampstead Heath, an expansive green space, offering a blend of rustic charm and British elegance that has attracted visitors for centuries.

Oldest pub in London

The bar is not only a place to relax, but also a piece of living history. It served as inspiration for famous literary figures such as Charles Dickens and John Keats, who once frequented it. Dickens even mentioned the pub in his work "The Pickwick Papers," while Keats is said to have written his famous "Ode to a Nightingale" in the gardens of the Spaniards Inn—though this claim is contested. The connection to such personalities adds a cultural depth to the venue that sets it apart from other cocktail bars.

Literary history of the pub

Another historical aspect is the legend surrounding the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin. It is said that his father was once the innkeeper of the pub, and Turpin himself regularly visited to spy on wealthy travelers from its elevated location. These anecdotes contribute to the mystical aura surrounding the Spaniards Inn. In fact, it is considered one of the most haunted pubs in London, with stories of ghosts such as the fallen Spanish duelist Juan or Turpin's horse, Black Bess, reportedly still roaming the halls and gardens.

Ghost stories about Spaniards Inn

The cocktail bar itself offers an impressive selection of drinks that caters to both traditional and modern tastes. In addition to a wide range of cask ales, craft beers, and fine wines, handcrafted spirits and creative cocktails are also prominent. These beverages pair wonderfully with the seasonal food offerings, which are freshly prepared. The pub is particularly famous for its Sunday roast, served with generous Yorkshire puddings, crispy thyme potatoes, and rich gravy, regularly praised as one of the best in Britain.

The interior of the Spaniards Inn captivates with its authentic historical charm: dark wooden panels, creaking floorboards, and open fireplaces create a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of bygone times. The furnishings extend over three floors, each with its own character reflecting the building's history. In the summer, one of London’s largest beer gardens beckons, ideal for leisurely afternoons, particularly after a walk through the nearby nature or a visit to the adjacent Kenwood House.

A notable historical incident connected to the pub occurred during the Gordon Riots of 1780. At that time, angry demonstrators were allegedly on their way to attack the nearby Kenwood House. The innkeeper of the Spaniards Inn is said to have detained them with free drinks until the local militia arrived and defused the situation—a clever ploy that saved the estate and underscored the pub's role as a gathering place in times of crisis.

Gorgeous day, group of 4, most didnt enjoy it, steak was just ok, though staff seem to rely on its always busy so make no effort, food is hit and miss, very overpriced, and food had to be sent back.

Absolutely appalling management, went there at just after 12, asked for one to sit outside for food and meal. Manager told me I could sit in any unreserved seating! Great. I saw many tables had reserved sign on them, but found one that was unreserved. After 15 minutes of no service, snappy manager scolded me down in front of other diners for sitting there. So I moved again, I thought my bad, maybe I missed a sign. So sat at another table and when the waitress came up and took my food order, also the other table with two ladies who were served from the full menu, were still asking for their drinks yet again. 5 mins later another waiter said I couldn't order from that menu, even thought it had been sent through. The manager came out (same snappy woman) who said i can't order off the full menu, that's only for reservations made in advance. But she will see if she can find somewhere in the most derisory tone. A) She told someone on the phone the don't take reservations over the phone, despite it saying so on their website, to ring for reservations. B) Why don't you just go back to what you and every other pub does, rather than a convoluted way of working that actual works for no-one, no wonder everyone in neighbouring Spaniards Inn is going elsewhere. C) please don't microwave the apple crumble, your not cooking this food from scratch. It's the same menu at all the pubs under Mitchell and Butlers. No doubt I'll get some auto response, or thanks for your feedback.

Went for dinner. I was in this pub a few times years ago, for drinks, always a nice spot and good atmosphere inside with the fire and the layout of the different rooms etc. But I went for dinner and the food was not up to what you expect for the price. I had the Pie which was decent, but I tried a few things from other peoples plates... Halloumi sticks loads of room for improvement. Chicken milanese was bad, the chicken steak was super thick and had a very plain flavour. Burger was burnt on both dides and was beyond well done, it was a "congratulations" as some people joke... Chips that came with milanese and burger were very average too. Overall, quite disappointed with the food. I will not go again for food, but still nice spot and decent service so good for drinks.
